Biographie

Robert Lionel Fanthorpe wurde am 9. Februar 1935 in Dereham, Norfolk, England geboren. Bevor er Lehrer wurde und an verschiedenen Schulen als Tutor und Direktor tätig war, arbeitete er als Journalist. Mittlerweile ist er Präsident von ASSAP (The Association for the Scientific Study of Anomalous Phenomena) und BUFORA (the British UFO Research Association), er arbeitet für Radio und TV, schreibt Songs, ist Leadsänger von "John Downes and the Amphibians" und der Autor von über 250 Büchern. Als wäre das noch nicht genug, gehört der passionierte Harley Davidson-Fahrer einem Wohltätigkeitsverein an, der sich um behinderte Kinder kümmert, zudem ist er anglikanischer Priester, der zeitweise und unbezahlt für eine Kirche in Wales arbeitet, ferner ist er ausgebildeter Trainer für Gewichteheben sowie Kampfsportlehrer.

Seit 1957 ist er mit seiner Frau Patricia verheiratet, die Co-Autorin bei vielen seiner Bücher, seine Agentin und für seine Öffentlichkeitsarbeit zuständig ist.

Gewöhnlich bekam Fanthorpe zu seiner Hoch-Zeit ein Cover zugeschickt, sollte dazu eine Inhaltszusammenfassung schreiben und ein paar Titel vorschlagen und begann dann damit das Buch überhaupt erst zu schreiben. Er ist einer der Vielschreibern des Genres, welcher es innerhalb einer Periode von 3 Jahren auf 89 Bücher brachte, also ungefähr alle 12 Tage ein Buch mit 158 Seiten. Um diese Rate zu erreichen, gewöhnte er sich an seine Bücher auf Bänder zu diktieren und diese abschreiben zu lassen, was zu manchen inhaltlichen Verwirrungen führte. Außerdem kam es schon mal vor, daß er einen Anruf bekam und man ihm mitteilte, daß er nur noch 3 - 4 Seiten hätte um das Buch zum Abschluß zu bringen, da er zeitweise sehr restriktive Wortanzahl-Vorgaben hatte. Er mußte sich nun unglaubliche Wendungen ausdenken, damit sein Held überlebte, denn in einem Fanthorpe-Buch siegt immer das Gute!
Gerne erging er sich auch in detailierten Beschreibungen von alltäglichen Dingen oder philosophischen Diskussionen zu handlungsunmöglichen Zeitpunkten. Der Verlag kürzte dann aber gelegentlich schon mal ganz kräftig.
